SARA-R410M-02B unable to receive SMS [closed]

I am unable to receive or send any text message from my SARA-R410M-02B.  I am using a Hologram simcard (from that I verified is active and receives SMS on a different device (SARA-U201 based).   The main symptom I see is any interaction with the command AT+CPMS always returns an ERROR and no further description even with CMEE=2

+CPMS: "ME",0,23,"ME",0,23,

+CPMS: 0,23,0,10,
+CPMS: "ME",0,23,"SM",0,10,

I have verifed the following:

  • Device is registered: AT+CREG? >> +CREG: 0,5
  • Signal strength is ok: AT+CSQ >> +CSQ: 20,99
  • Device is on Verizon network: AT+COPS? >> +COPS: 0,0,"Verizon Wireless Hologram",8
  • Device APN is configured per simcard documentation:
+CGDCONT: 2,"IPV4V6","VZWADMIN","",0,0,0,0
+CGDCONT: 3,"IPV4V6","vzwinternet","",0,0,0,0
+CGDCONT: 6,"IPV4V6","VZWCLASS6","",0,0,0,0
+CGDCONT: 1,"IP","hologram","",0,0,0,0
Device configuration info is:
Manufacturer: u-blox
Model: SARA-R410M-02B
Revision: L0. [Feb 03 2018 13:00:41]
SVN: 00

Any thoughts on first, how to not get an error on the AT+CPMS commands and second, how to receive an SMS?

SMS handling of LTE CAT M1 network is completely different compared with 3G, 2G or even LTE CAT 4 networks.  Typically CAT M1 networks do not allow SMS to be sent to/from device or cell phone.  Some allow SMS from portal only.

You would need to talk with SIM provider to determine what SMS is allowed.

Thanks grumpy for the response! I understand that it is different technology.  SMS is listed as supported on the SARA-R410M-02B datasheet as well as supported by AT&T and Verizon Cat-M1 networks.  I asked Hologram (simcard provider) and am waiting for a response but I am fairly certain they support it.

Note regardless of simcard and simcard capability, I should still not get an "ERROR" with the AT+CPMS?  command which, especially on the AT+CPMS="ME, "ME" setting which doesn't even try to store data on the simcard.  This is why I think this is a module configuration issue, not a network / simcard issue.

Note the SMS' I try to send to the device are through the simcard providers web portal, not from a phone or other 3rd party device.

I found out it was a configuration issue with the AT+CPMS command, I needed to provide 3 fields, not 2:

+CPMS: 0,23,0,23,0,23

And after a few seconds, SMS messages showed up:

+CPMS: "ME",2,23,"ME",2,23,"ME",2,23

Note I took this from Hologram's Python SDK
